We started the Cross Country Bicycle Tour at South Carlsbad State Beach CA just outside of San Diego on March 3, 2008. Beautiful campsites perched on a cliff above the Pacific, it was a peacefully perfect sendoff from the Left Coast! Paul wanted to pedal the PCH past his old grade school in La Jolla, CA before the big crossing & found the bike paths following the coast all the way down to Ocean Beach in San Diego.
Day 2 rode thru the desert, which was in bloom and quite beautiful, to Jacumba Hot Springs @ the Mexican Border and there sure was a lot of Border Patrol vehicles and roadblock/checks along the way.
It was a beautiful scenic route along the PCH coast, only taking a couple hours before making it for lunch down @ Ocean Beach, San Diego CA, where the Adventure Cycling Map BEGINS. Paul dipped his tires in the Pacific for luck and headed off for a 2 month Trans-Continental Ride.
Day 3 continued the route to Brawley and while on the way thru El Centro we spotted the Blue Angles, who were out practicing their acrobatic runs, and they were spectacular to watch.
Day 1 we made it to Lake Jennings County Park about 40 miles out of San Diego. A clean, lush reservoir, it was a small but well maintained camping place outside of the nearby urban hustle. We built our first campfire & toasted the stars!
Day 4 ended near the Colorado River with a stay at Walter's Camp on the river. Then on Day 5 we went to Quartzsite, Arizona, with a ride along I-10. We stayed in the support vehicle, shown above with Rylee, before heading out on a century ride to Wickenburg, AZ., on Day 6
